Bitcoin and Friends Episode 3

Bitcoin and Friends just released episode 3 and it continues to cover the issues that served as the catalyst for Bitcoin’s creation. Without including any spoilers, they’re reinforcing the libertarian theme throughout the show. That includes the perpetual war on drugs that this country has been fighting and losing for almost 100 years. Ross Ulbricht is painted as a patriot in the show, which many viewers may see as an accurate representation. Ross is currently serving a double life sentence, plus forty years, for creating the Silk Road website. This is a longer sentence than most pedophiles, rapists, and murders get after they’re convicted. Ross wanted to allow people to exercise their freedom and autonomy by buying and consuming whatever “illegal” substances they wanted. The Silk Road allowed people to buy these substances using Bitcoin on a privacy-focused network called Tor.

The “justice system” wanted to make an example out of Ross. They may have slowed down the libertarian movement. However, at its core, there is a certain truth that can not be stopped. You and I have the right to do whatever we want with our own bodies as long as we’re not hurting anyone else. It seems so simple to grasp yet many of us have somehow been tricked into telling people what they can or cannot do with their own body. Maybe we weren’t, or aren’t, mature enough as a species to accept this as a universal right. Still, it is only a matter of time until it is accepted.

I thought Episode 3’s intro piece was interesting too. They covered a cryptocurrency called Loom. Loom is a network that allows developers to deploy decentralized applications using their SDK (software development kit). It also serves as a learning platform by teaching you how to code your very own decentralized zombie game.
